North West Queensland regional water supply strategy

The draft North West Queensland Regional Water Supply Strategy (PDF, 4.6MB) was released for public comment on 23 January 2012. The final North West Strategy should be released by early 2014.

The draft Strategy promotes water services that are consistent with the North West Regional Plan, the Water Resource (Gulf) Plan 2007, Water Resource (Georgina and Diamantina) Plan 2004 and the Water Resource (Great Artesian Basin) Plan 2006.

Strategy area

The strategy area (PDF, 476.0KB) of approximately 356,080 km2 includes the southern catchments of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland, as well as Mornington Island and the upper reaches of the Diamantina and parts of the Georgina Rivers.

The following drainage basins are in the strategy area:

  • Flinders
  • Gilbert
  • Leichhardt
  • Morning
  • Mornington
  • Nicholson
  • Norman
  • Settlement
  • Staaten
  • Diamantina
  • Georgina.
